Fall Holiday Decoration Storage: Tips for a Clutter-Free Transition

As the air turns crisp and the beauty of fall graces our homes, it’s time to prepare for one of the most exciting parts of the season—decorating! But as we enjoy the autumn vibes, it’s also crucial to plan how to store your seasonal decorations efficiently. By using smart storage solutions, you can preserve your cherished decor, keep it looking great year after year, and make the next decorating season hassle-free.

Here are some practical tips to help you store your fall holiday decorations:

1. Group Decorations by Room or Vignette

As a professional organizer, I recommend grouping decorations by the room or vignette they belong to. Store them in solid-colored bins with labels on all sides to create a calm and cohesive look. This approach helps you stay organized and eliminates visual chaos caused by mixed colors and textures.

2. Consider Storage Bin Colors

While clear bins are great for items you access frequently, solid-colored bins work better for seasonal decorations that you only use once a year. For example, use a large 45-gallon tote in red or green to store tree decorations for quick identification during the holidays. You could use clear bins but just know that because the colors will peek a boo through the clear bin & can make a space look busy…. and that doesn’t allow you eye to land and be still to take in all the glory that is holiday decor. Therefore I like to use large solid red or green totes to group things for the next year. This will make the installation of all these decor go up a lot easier & faster the next year.

3. Protect Fragile Items

Wrap delicate decorations in bubble wrap puches or soft fabric before placing them in sturdy containers to prevent breakage.

4. Maximize Small Spaces

If you live in an loft or apartment, stack your bins neatly and hide them with a curtain for a polished finish. This technique keeps your space looking clean and ensures no one will ever guess what’s behind the curtain!
